Please join me for these free events in April and May.
In these times, gathering with book and Earth lovers feels like good medicine.
It’s Poetry Month and the wonderful people at Poet Tree Town are filling Ann Arbor with poster poems
When you’re in downtown Ann Arbor, stop by Literati Bookstore and read my poem, “Vespers,” born on the Huron River bank, which will be hanging in their window as part of Poet Tree Town’s inspiring gift to Ann Arbor residents and visitors. It’s just one of scores of poster poems you’ll encounter in April, all around town, many by children.
It’s Earth Month. Four poets will celebrate poetry and Earth and you’re invited
On Friday, April 11, at 6:30, I will be at Literati Bookstore with three stellar poets—Patricia Clark, Lynn Domina, and Caroline Harper New—as we celebrate their new books of poems, ecopoetry, and our immense appreciation for Earth. We will have time for conversation and your questions. Come start your weekend feeling inspired.
What If We Get It Right?—an anti-gloom-and-doom book discussion
On Monday, April 14, I will be back at Literati Bookstore for a discussion of What If We Get Right?, the marvelous new compendium of environmentally aware wisdom by Ayana Elizabeth Johnson. And yes, this book is inspiring. Do you know about Literati’s Eco Book Club? We’ve been meeting for 10 years. You can come often or once in awhile or once. We welcome anyone who is interested in exploring the eco-wisdom to be found in books as we face environmental injustice, climate chaos, and the extinction crisis. Find more details below.
I get to talk with an amazing human who really did go back to the land, had a lot of adventures, and wrote a book about it
On Friday, May 30 (yes, this one’s not till the end of May), I will join essayist and dear friend Tamara Dean at Literati Bookstore where she will be celebrating the launch of her new book Shelter and Storm: At Home in the Driftless. Tamara works as hard as anyone I have ever met—on everything she puts her mind too. She’s also smart, funny, and amazingly well informed. She’ll read. We’ll talk. And we’ll make time for your questions.
Persist!
Alison
Our next Eco Book Club discussion will take place Monday, April 14, 2025, at 6:30 PM at Literati Bookstore (124 E. Washington, Ann Arbor, Michigan). All are welcome as we discuss What If We Get It Right? by Ayana Elizabeth Johnson, who includes the voices of 33 eco-thinkers in the compendium of wisdom. We have already had one discussion of the book. This time we will focus on pp. 136-301. Our reading choices are informed by the climate, extinction, and land-abuse crises; environmental racism; and the need to foster a sense of possibility. Find a list of books we have read here.
